Recording your tax status
Record whether your organization is a 501(c)(3), a 501(c)(4), a union or something else, under Administration, then General.
On this page
Your organization's tax status is one setting under Administration, then General. It records how your organization is set up for tax purposes.
Setting it
- Open Administration, then General.
- In Tax status, choose one:
- 501(c)(3) nonprofit
- 501(c)(4) nonprofit
- Union
- Other, for any other kind of organization
- Not set, if you have not decided or would rather not say
- Select Save.
Every organization starts as Not set. You can change the status, or set it back to Not set, at any time.
Only owners and admins can see or change it, as with the rest of Administration, then General. The field appears on organization workspaces; campaign workspaces do not have it.
What it means
A 501(c)(3) organization may not support or oppose a candidate for public office. A 501(c)(4), a union and other kinds of organization have different rules.
OrganizeOS does not check your status against any official record. Confirm it with your lawyer or treasurer before you rely on it, and especially before you send anything about a candidate.
Why this matters
What your organization may say about candidates depends on how it is set up, and getting it wrong can put a nonprofit's tax exemption at risk. Recording the status once, where your settings live, means it is there when your team needs it.
