Signing a petition
How to sign an organization's petition and what happens after you submit it.
Organizations use petitions to show public support for a cause and to deliver signatures to the people they're addressed to. You don't need an OrganizeOS account to sign one.
Signing
- Open the petition's public page (shared as a link by the organization).
- Enter your name and email. City, state, and ZIP are optional but help show where support is coming from.
- Check the box if you'd also like updates from the organization.
- Select Sign the petition.
If the petition has a signing deadline and it's passed, the form is replaced with the petition's final results instead.
Confirming your signature
After you submit, OrganizeOS sends a confirmation email. Your signature only counts toward the public total and reaches the petition's recipients once you click the confirmation link — this two-step process (sometimes called double opt-in) keeps signature counts honest. If you don't confirm, your name doesn't appear on the signer wall or in the count.
Signing again with the same email later doesn't create a duplicate — it's treated as the same signature.
What's public
The petition page shows a running total and a signer wall of names alongside city and state (if you provided them). Your email address is never shown publicly.
Why this matters
A petition is often the first, lowest-barrier way to back a cause you care about. Confirming your signature is what makes it count — an organization delivering "10,000 signatures" to a recipient needs those to be real, confirmed people, and the confirmation step is what makes that number trustworthy.
