How to build your personal network on OrganizeOS by connecting with other members, and what connecting unlocks.

On this page

Connections are your personal network on OrganizeOS: the people you can message directly, independent of which organizations you both belong to. Being in the same organization does not make someone a connection; you connect with them first. Open Connections from your dashboard on the web, or from the menu in the mobile app, to manage them.

Your three lists

Connections has three tabs, each with a badge showing how many are waiting:

  • Connections — people you're connected with now, sorted alphabetically.
  • Requests — connection requests other people have sent you.
  • Sent — requests you've sent that haven't been accepted yet.

Connecting with someone

There are two ways to start a connection:

  • Find by handle. Choose Add by handle on the web or Find by handle in the app, type the person's @handle, and select Find. If they exist, you'll see their name and bio and can select Send request. If you're already connected, or a request is already pending, the screen tells you instead of letting you send a duplicate.

  • Share your QR code. Choose Show my QR on the web, or open your Profile in the app, to bring up your personal connect code and link. A scan in the OrganizeOS app is an in-person handshake: choose Scan a connect QR in the app, point the camera at someone's code, and you're connected on the spot. Opening the link anywhere else, for example a link someone forwarded you, sends that person a connection request instead, which they accept from their Requests tab.

Your code is only good for connecting on the spot while it is on your screen: it refreshes every few minutes, so show it live rather than sending a picture of it. A screenshot, a printed copy, or a link you paste still works — it sends a connection request instead of connecting instantly.

If two people send each other a request, the second request connects them right away.

Your connect link and QR code also live on your Profile page. Claim a handle from Profile on the web or Edit profile in the app; you can change it once every 30 days.

Responding to a request

On the Requests tab, choose Accept to add the connection or Decline to dismiss it. On the Sent tab, you can Cancel a request you've sent that hasn't been answered yet. If someone's request is waiting on you when you open their connect link, you can accept it right there.

Once you're connected

From the Connections tab, select the message icon next to someone's name on the web, or open their connection in the app and choose Send message, to open a direct message conversation with them. The overflow menu next to each connection on the web also lets you Remove connection or Block. In the app, a connection's page offers Block and Remove.

Removing a connection or blocking someone pauses your direct message with them for both of you: the conversation stays readable, but neither of you can send in it until you connect again. Blocking also stops them from sending you a new request. The person you block isn't told: to them it looks as if you aren't connected, and only you can lift the block.

Why this matters

Connections are what make direct messages possible across organizations. You don't need to share an org with someone to reach them, and being in the same org isn't enough on its own: only a connection opens a conversation, so nobody can message you without your say. See direct messages for how those conversations work once you're connected.
